Japan's Mount Asama about to erupt

Tens of thousands of people living near Mount Asama (in Honshū, on the border of Gunma and Nagano) have been told to brace themselves for a major volcanic eruption within 48 hours.

The volcano is one of Japan's most active and last erupted in September 2004 when molten rock and ash blanketed areas more than 125 miles from the crater.

Even by Japanese standards, Mount Asama is an active volcano, with frequent bouts of activity over recent years. The most famous eruption came in 1783 and caused the deaths of more than 1,500 people and widespread damage.

Japan's Meteorological Agency yesterday raised the alert level for the 8,420ft peak, warning of an imminent eruption and forbidding anyone to scale the mountain.

More than 45,000 nearby residents have been put on alert and told to be ready to leave their homes within two hours notice.

According to scientists at an observation station operated by Tokyo University, there was a sharp increase in volcanic earthquakes in the region in January, with their epicentres directly below the peak of the mountain. That volcanic activity accelerated on Sunday morning and was accompanied by crustal change, apparently caused by increased magma movement beneath the peak.

Experts are predicting an eruption is possible in a matter of hours and an initial blast could hurl volcanic rocks up to 2.5 miles.

Just confirmed with Shiga Kogen tourism that the area is far enough and did not affect by the erupt.

The web cam also confirmed there are still people skiing in the mountain:p.

Mount Asama (浅間山) is an active volcano in the main island of Japan (Honshu) and sits on the border of the Gunma and Nagano prefectures. It is Honshu Island's most active volcano and overlooks the resort town of Karuizawa, 87 miles (140 km) NW of Tokyo. The Asama Volcano Observatory (established in 1933), run by the Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo, resides on the eastern slope of the volcano.

Mount Asama is roughly 85 miles (137km) north of Hakone, where Tokyo-3 is situated. In Episode 10, the Angel Sandalphon is discovered inside Mount Asama after the Earthquake Research Institute (presumably the Asama Volcano Observatory) reported seismic activity.

Just come back from Hakuba, skiing is not affected at all by the volcano eruption so far. People are still skiing at Karuizawa which is probably the nearest resort from Mount Asama.

Skiers are better lovers.
