KYL,

That "Nutcracker" really took me 1 full day when I was in one of the ski club name Broken River, a bit pain in the back but once you got used to it, it's easy, just have to be patient, good luck and have fun.

Paulo,
What was your opinion of Broken River? I've read its a bit of a hike from the parking area to the hill. I've also read that the nutcrackers are easier if you buy and bring your own climbing harness?

KYL,

well I would say you don't have to hike from the parking lot, there is a sort of small cable " Cabin" that pull you up to their/our accommodation house, but from there you have to hike (easy 10 minutes man-made path) to the ski field where those cable and nutcracker shall be used. During my stay, I had a whole week package and the belt and nutcracker were free to rent.

Mostly off piste and backcountry ski, two main bowls but most of the locals went to the other sides of the mountain, I don't have a local partner or a guide so I stay within that 2 bowls, I was lucky that everyday was powder and I had a free instructor for a total of 4 hours lesson throughout the whole stay (package included). Food was so so as it was cooked by the staff there but they really have a unique atmosphere there as most of the staff's parent were the one who built this ski club (real construction) and now the 2nd generation is running and maintain it, so they all have a hearty love of the place.

FMO, 3 days is quite enough unless you could go all the way backcountry and after that nutcracker, you will find riding T bar is already a luxury moment.

Thanks very much for the info Paulo! Sounds like quite the interesting place.
Another question - is it possible to skin (ie cross country ski climb) the path up, and ski down from the lodge?

In fact I don't think you need to do that because there is a small ski storage cabin (no heater) up there at the ski field, all you have to do is carry your skis the very first time, hike/walk up there then the rest of the days you just need to walk up from the lodge with your ski boots on. well I skied down to the lodge the last day and I guess that path is alright if you really want to skin up there.

Go to their web if you are interested,

Mike 正向着好的方向發展
Latest development for 2014 season

A few developments over the summer on the various mountains in NZ to add to the interest.

Coronet Peak, double the terrain covered by lights for the Friday and Saturday evenings night skiing.

Remarakables, lots of money being spent. A new six seat chair lift from the car park up to Curvey Basin opening up more terrain to create new runs, reshaped the beginners area, reshaped the car parks, realigned the last few corners of the road to the car parks, 50 new snow guns and finally started sealing the access road with about 1/3 done for this winter and the rest to be done in the near future.

Cardrona, new intermediate terrain park.

Treble Cone, to make it easier for intermediate skiers returning to the Home Basin from the Saddle Basin, earthworks to extend the High Street trail, the new High Street Extension will provide a new alignment and a longer, wider, gentler gradient.
